Preschool
ITHACA, NEW YORK SPRING 2019 | Prof. Katharina Kral This preschool, consisting of a child care center and adjoining community center, is sited between a creek and a steep slope. The classrooms protrude from the base of the hillside and fan from east to west, respective to ascending age group. This arrangement captures the sunlight and caters to the rhythms of each stage of childhood. The infants on the western side receive less sunlight in the morning to optimize their need to sleep, while the older children on the eastern side enjoy sunlight all day long. Each classroom is lined with 3’ deep bookshelves inlaid with windows, which invite the children to burrow into the lower shelves and connect with the outdoors.
